Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure (Citizen Dev)

ABOUT AIRWALLEX Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own. We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,700 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles https://www.airwallex.com/en-us/operating-principles to see it in full.   HOW YOU'LL MAKE IMPACT The Citizen Developers Infrastructure team builds the internal platform that helps non-product engineering groups create and operate workflows and automations safely. You'll shape the platform services, developer experience, and guardrails that help teams ship value quickly without deep infrastructure knowledge. - Design, build, and evolve the citizen-developer platform and tools that make it easier to create and operate automations and applications. - Establish secure software development lifecycle practices and guardrails so security, compliance, and engineering best practices are built in by default. - Build self-serve development and operations tooling that helps teams move faster while reducing dependence on central platform engineers. - Design, build, and maintain Temporal-based workflow infrastructure, solving for multi-tenancy, high availability, reliability, and cost effectiveness. - Strengthen the Kubernetes and GitOps foundation, including ArgoCD, Helm, and Terraform, so deployments are safe, repeatable, and auditable. - Partner with application teams and citizen developers to define clear tooling, patterns, APIs, contracts, and development processes. - Lead incident response for workflow-related services and drive long-term fixes through code reviews, technical design discussions, and on-call support. - Document standards, best practices, and reference architectures so teams building on the platform have clear, self-serve guidance. You'll work from our Singapore office five days a week. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR ESSENTIALS - 6+ years of experience in software or platform engineering, building and operating backend or platform services in production. - Strong hands-on experience with at least one strongly typed backend language, such as Golang or Java, and familiarity with Python or Bash for tooling and automation. - Experience designing and building internal platforms or developer tooling used by multiple teams, with a strong focus on developer experience. - Experience with Kubernetes and GitOps practices and tooling, ideally including ArgoCD and Terraform. - Experience working in highly collaborative, multi-team environments, translating platform constraints into clear APIs, contracts, and paved paths for application teams and citizen developers. - A practical, proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, break down complex technical problems, and drive them to closure. PREFERRED - Experience building platforms or tooling for non-product engineering users, such as operations, finance, or analysts, or working with low-code, no-code, or citizen-developer environments. - Proven experience with Temporal or similar workflow and orchestration systems, such as Cadence, Step Functions, or Airflow. - Experience operating large-scale stateful workloads, such as Redis clusters, Cassandra, or HBase, in production. YOU'LL THRIVE HERE IF - You're comfortable owning the roadmap yourself. - You own the outcome and you don't wait for permission to fix what's broken. - You're comfortable with ambiguity. Give you a problem, not a prescription, and you'll run with it. - You say what you mean. You're direct, but you lead with respect. - You simplify complexity rather than hiding behind it. LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR TEAM The Infrastructure & Productivity team at Airwallex builds the technical foundation that allows our global engineering organization to scale. Our customers are our fellow engineers, and our mission is to make their daily work faster, safer, and more effective by managing the core platforms everyone relies on, from Kubernetes and Kafka to CI/CD pipelines and observability systems. The real challenge lies in keeping these global systems highly reliable and secure while simultaneously optimizing cloud costs, automating manual support, and driving standardization without slowing down product delivery. We operate under the philosophy that best practices should be the path of least resistance, not a forced mandate. If you're a systems thinker who wants to work close to the core of the company and directly shape how we build, deploy, and scale software worldwide, this is where that work happens.
